Capitalizing on summer



Those gorgeous warm days and the beauty of Renfrew Park draw old and young alike to enjoy nature and a step back in time. Summer Institute, with a variety of activities for children, is a great way for kids to enjoy the park while learning something new and exciting. For 2015, Summer Institute includes a variety of fun and fascinating programs—including an off-site offering—as well as old favorites.

Summer Institute Heritage Workshop: Tooled Tin TBA for 2016
July, 2016 • Date & Time TBA
For students completing grades 6 through 10
Explore the time-honored craft of tooling tin, and create a handcrafted night light. Instructor: Bob North. Participants should bring a bagged lunch to eat in the park. Fee applies.

2016 Summer Institute Heritage Workshops: Archaeology
Date & Time TBA • 9 a.m. to noon
For students completing grades 6 through 12
Archaeologist Scott Parker conducts hands-on archaeological workshops involving excavation (digging), screening (finding artifacts), recording and artifact identification. Parker says, “Students are guaranteed to have a new and different experience, to get dirty, to find cool stuff, and to learn about the lives of the folks who settled the Waynesboro area.” For students completing grades 6–12. Limit: 10. Pre-registration required by July 17. Workshop conducted on the Stoner farmstead in Waynesboro. Fee applies. Check back in Spring 2016 for details on all Summer Institute activities.

2016 Summer Institute Heritage Workshop: Basketry
Date & Time TBA • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
For students completing grades 3 through 12
Learn the traditional craft of basketry, and hand weave a functional and beautiful basket. Instructor: Susan Matson. Fee applies. Check back in Spring 2016 for details on all Summer Institute activities.

Summer Institute: Mornings In The Park: Nose To Nose With Nature 2016
Wednesdays in June & July, TBA • 9:30–11 a.m.
For children completing grades K through 3
Underwriting support provided by sponsors to be announced
Explore nature’s best spots with Renfrew Institute’s environmental instructors. Check out those weird, wild, wonderful creatures and plants that help make our life on earth possible. Tools, stories, secret missions, music, and games will add to the fun and adventure. Bring old sneakers for wading. *Members $4 per child/Non-members $5 per child, per session. Attend one or more. Pre-registration not required. Meet at Visitors Center. Please arrive 15 minutes early to register.  *Member discount for memberships of $25 or more. Summer Institute: Children’s Summer Stories at Renfrew 2016  
Tuesdays in June & July, TBA • 11 a.m.
Preschoolers and up
Children gather under the tree near the Visitor’s Center to listen to stories and enjoy related hands-on activities. Free admission. (If inclement weather, call 717-762-0373 to confirm.)Check back in Spring 2016 for more information.

Summer Institute: Mornings In The Park: Down a Garden Path 2016
Date & Time TBA • (One session only!!)
For children completing grades K through 4
Step into the four-square garden with Renfrew Institute garden expert, Doris Goldman. Join in the fun as we look for hidden treasures and hunt for butterflies and ladybugs. Make garden crafts, explore an old barn, listen to stories, or make rain with watering bells. We will water, dig, pick and play! Wear shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
